Sustainable Food City Lancaster aims to develop a cross-sector food partnership that oversees the development and delivery of an action plan that brings good food back to the table in Lancaster

In late 2017 the Sustainable Food Cities Network awarded Sustainable Food City Lancaster (SFCL) a £10,000 grant to support its efforts to make local, healthy and sustainable food available to everyone in Lancaster. The Sustainable Food City coordinator is employed by LESS, who matched the £10,000 grant with £10,000 of its own money.

As part of this work it aims to:

Develop a city-wide food poverty network to support current food poverty initiatives in moving beyond the foodband.
Update Lancaster’s local food directory,

Run four seasonal local food markets to raise the profile of local sustainable food businesses and community food projects.

Work towards applying for a Sustainable Food City bronze award.

The national Sustainable Food Cities programme is a partnership between the Soil Association, Food Matters and Sustain. It is funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and supports cities to transform food culture.

The Sustainable Food Cities programme work across six key areas:

  1. Promoting healthy and sustainable food to the public
  2. Tackling food poverty, diet-related ill health and access to affordable healthy food
  3. Building community food knowledge, skills, resources and projects
  4. Promoting a vibrant and diverse sustainable food economy
  5. Transforming catering and food procurement
  6. Reducing waste and the ecological footprint of the food system
