The service worked mainly to support after-school growing clubs, and designing food-growing spaces, including contributing to Lancaster University’s ‘Edible Campus’ project.
This project is no longer running, but we had great feedback about the work we did:
The Gardener in Residence service provided by LESS has proved to be excellent value for money for the school. Working with an experienced and qualified horticulture expert ensures an abundant, high quality crop with numerous opportunities for regular involvement of pupils, volunteers and staff.
A dedicated Gardener in Residence ensures we are not reliant on the goodwill of staff and volunteers with many other conflicting priorities. The provision of management during the school holidays has ensured that no crops are lost and the growing areas continue to thrive throughout the year.
Overall the scheme has really ensured that food growing has become embedded at Willow Lane School and has helped us significantly towards Eco Schools awards. I would highly recommend working with LESS to any other schools and community organisations in the area.
